here since I didn't explain it. sometime after Jaws came out, which was in theaters for a very long time and very successful every weekend, the studios decided they could make more money pumping out block busters every month or so instead of relying on a single movie to make them money. so they renegotiated their contracts with theaters as to give them 90%+ of the ticket sales on opening week, then shrinking percentages week after week. Why does popcorn, drinks, and candy cost so much? This is why. The theaters don't actually make any money off of ticket sales because of this agreement they made with studios decades ago. Studios now through fancy financing w/ their connections on wall st keep the flow of cash coming to make more and more movies which they use to push the old ones out of theaters and increase their revenue/profit. ever wonder why ticket prices are so cheap along with the price of popcorn etc at discount movie theaters playing 6mo-1yr old movies? that's because those theaters keep nearly the entirety of the ticket sale.
