I think you're right, just because of how gross a spectacle it is to see these 'victims' smiling and laughing and enjoying the limelight while the parents of their dead schoolmates grieve. Having lived through the college application and prep school process however, I am very aware that the prime motivating factor of literally EVERYTHING you do is to improve your chances of application success. It was such a big deal in school that we had personal coaches on how to game the system and meetings once a month to track our progress.
