I watched the movie a long time ago and I liked it a lot. iirc the director said the the main point of the movie is to serve as a warning and a reminder to the Japanese youth how much harder life was for their ancestors. Thre's also theme of stubbornness and pride leading to doom.

However, for a film to feel forced it has to have either bad directing, unbelievable characters, nonsensical plot full of holes, animation, music or sound effects so bad it fucks up the entire film, bad pacing, etc. This movie doesn't have any of those things. You could argue that you find it hard to connect with the main characters, since he makes obviously bad decisions, but I believe that the movie gave enought background to make his actions feel realistic. You're also forgetting that the story doesn't have to be the main focus for the movie, book, game, whatever to be good. Sometimes the central themes and message are more important.
