There was actually an armed uprising in the early days of the country for tax reasons. Washington himself led the military in to put down the rebellion.

Look at the individual Constitutions of the early states. They make clear that weapons are kept to defend against foreign enemies, defend homes/family, and keep the government in check. It was under those assumptions that the US Constitution was written and ratified. There was no question of it then.
The Whiskey Rebellion was under the idea of "No Taxation Without Representation", which didn't apply because they were represented and the Constitution gave Congress the power to tax.
