i feel like i would have a lot in common with the average russian citizen, like sharing a deep distrust of the russian and US governments.
this is mostly true. the Russian government does want to establish better diplomatic and trade relations, though. and they're tired of the US government destroying the Middle East, which doesn't help anyone.
also, Russian conservatives don't like the US because they see it as attacking Russia (Yeltsin years, opposition to Crimea annexation) and how quickly America is collapsing. Russians see stuff like American men cutting their dicks off and are absolutely horrified. they would like America if it hadn't turned absolutely insane.
also, nationalists are only a smal segment of the Russian population, about the same size as the liberals and the communists. most Russians are pro-Putin conservatives.
