With the German breakthroughs in fusion research at Greifswald with the Wendelstein 7-x, a 99.7% German funded fusion stellarator, even Elon Musk is trying to get some share of the pie.
"The best fuel the German stellarator can get is right there on the Moon and Falcon Heavy is the best rocket to get it from there", said Mr. Musk talking to the German nuclear fusion association in Berlin on Thursday.
Asked whether Germany will cooperate with SpaceX and Musk's The Boring Company on mining Helium 3 on the Moon, the chief scientist and CEO of the Wendelstein 7-x operations, Prof. Thomas Klinger said, "We welcome all cooperations with Mr. Musk and SpaceX, even though I must say, Germany cannot and will not share its fusion secrets."
ITER pisses all over it desu... and the fact the a shill like Elon Musk is getting on it just makes it look more like a money grab...

Fusion technology is already a thing, or can at least easily become a thing, but the USA won't let it happen because it'll threaten the petrodollar.
Think about it, how little time passed from the Nuclear bomb to the nuclear powerplant? How much time has passed ever since the Thermonuclear bomb/H-bomb was invented? It doesn't make sense that such energy potential hasn't been harnessed yet. Only plausible explanation is strong political factions such as the USA and Russia benefiting from it not being invented.

>hey Hans why not build a fusion power plant on the moon how does he plan on bringing all that cheap and clean energy back to earth? Is he going to fly batteries back and forth for charging or transfer it back through a 6 gorillion gigawatt laser pointed at Jerusalem? Elon Musk is a fucking meme.

infinitely less energy and fuel required to launch from the moon 'down' to earth because of gravity.

Having an extremely reliable and high energy source on the moon would jumpstart the colonization process 100x.
A fully functioning city would be built within a few decades
Space Elevator would be achievable by the half century mark or a bit after. definitely within the century.
After that it's all game. Asteroid farming, Mars, Alpha Centauri. All within another 200 years if modern western civilization doesn't deteriorate due to the degenerate culture we've cultivated.

David Miller
Lockheed Martin is already ahead in the fusion race.
Their "Compact Fusion" program, run by the Skunkworks (area 51) is within 5 years of being commercially released.
Their plan is to make a system small enough to be useful. How useful? The big plane in this image is the C5 Galaxy. The CF power plant will fit on this plane and will allow it to fly for a year on "a few bottles" of hydrogen.
Daniel Bell
>implying American assets aren't working on the project, fucking employees, and haven't bugged every computer and phone in the entire building

Dominic Stewart
>We have problems getting to positive energy territory as it is.
that is what we want the Americans to think. No way we would shut down our nuclear fission plants and coal power plants without a backup plan!
Jace Bailey
That's dumb. The advantage of using He-3 for fuel in a fusion device is high output and low waste and byproducts, that's true... but we're still at the "get it fucking working" stage of development here, that's why everyone's trying to make heavy hydrogen, D-D and D-T fusion, work, because they're the lightest, lowest effort options to try and prove that sustainable fusion can work. You don't start processing high-end gasoline before you get the internal combustion engine working.
ITER is a clusterfuck and the odds of it yielding viable results for sustainable fusion grow slimmer every day. The budget is probably going to blow up to $40-50 billion before the first plasma, and the deadlines are stretching from months to years to decades as progress continually slips. And even worse, the fusion community is already seriously talking about what the bigger, bulkier, more expensive replacement for ITER will be like. You cannot make fusion sustainable if every fucking reactor costs 10, 20, 30 times what it costs to build a conventional uranium fission plant and takes 5-10 times as long to get it up and running.
ITER was a mistake and the fusion community needs to go back to basics and come up with ways to make smaller existing platforms like W7-X and DIII-D more effective at confinement. This entire attitude of bigger is better is crippling the fusion community and drawing billions away from other plasma science.
Ethan Reyes
If only Elon Musk and Germany could collaborate on solving the non-white crisis.
Cooper Anderson
>that is what we want the Americans to think. No way we would shut down our nuclear fission plants and coal power plants without a backup plan! The person who approved that idiotic plan in the wake of the Fukushima incident is the same one who approved giving millions of refugees a permanent home in your country. There is no backup plan - you guys are already buying surplus fission power off of France and surplus coal power off your other neighbors.

>Germany cannot and will not share its fusion secrets. We gonna have to paperclip you fucks again?
Michael Ortiz
The crossections are pretty well measured. You'd need either higher energy or higher density to make He3 fusion viable. It's of course what we should try to accomplish: a fusion reactor that can even burn pure hydrogen but for now we have to be content with Tritium from Lithium6.
>No way we would shut down our nuclear fission plants and coal power plants without a backup plan! We already pay huge prices for our energy. Germans are just dumb. Just read the newspaper. At the moment everyone spergs out because some tiny NOX amounts from car exhausts. A total fluke. There is nothing to worry about NOX in the concentration that we currently have.

No they didn't - they just stopped working on MSRs because the conventional reactors developed at the time were seen as good enough - uranium was plentiful and times were good. It's only post-meltdown and with the looming scarcity of uranium that we've started taking another look at MSRs, and there are still some major issues to overcome.
The Oakridge experiments demonstrated that Thorium-fuel cycles and MSRs were viable concepts, but never successfully combined everything into a single package to demonstrate whether the in-situ aspect of the LFTR concept (transmuting Thorium into U-233 in the device itself rather than in an external device).
