>The business of war: Russian mercenaries in Syria
A paramilitary chief who serves as a contact for Russians who want to become mercenaries in Syria discusses the grim business of making war for profit. He spoke to FRANCE 24 only on condition of anonymity. If you live near Russia's Yekaterinburg and want to fight with pro-regime forces in Syria, there’s one man you need to speak to. He is a paramilitary chief who advises Russians wanting to work for Wagner, a shadowy Kremlin-linked private military contractor known for sending mercenaries to Syria.
“Each week I receive five or six new requests,” he told FRANCE 24. “Some call me by phone, others come to see me. About a hundred people in the region are planning to go to Syria.”
>He said that interest has only increased since the Russian foreign ministry reported that five Russians died in a US bombing raid on pro-regime troops attacking opposition forces in Syria's Deir Ezzor province on February 7.
“Now, it’s more about getting revenge than it is about money,” he said.
>But the chief warned that these revenge-seekers don’t know the whole story. According to him, it wasn’t just five Russians killed in the American raid – it was 218. (US officials have said about 100 pro-regime fighters were killed, without specifying whether they were Syrian army, Russian or other forces.)
However, the paramilitary chief said only 150 bodies have so far been recovered.
“There are 150 people in refrigerators on the Wagner base” back in Russia, he said. “Their state? 'Minced meat' is how they described them to me.”
>Far left on the front lines: The Westerners joining the Kurds' fight in Syria
Fighters from France, Britain, Greece and beyond have joined Kurds in their battle against Turkish troops in Syria’s Afrin. Often identifying with the far left, these volunteers have set off to fight, and even die, for a "Kurdish revolution".
Between 100 and 400 Westerners have joined the YPG’s ranks in Syria, analysts tell FRANCE 24, including a handful of French nationals as well as Americans, Britons, Greeks, Germans and Italians. Having initially set off to battle the Islamic State Group, the YPG’s battalion of foreign volunteers announced in a statement on January 26 that it had now mobilised to “defend Afrin”. The Kurdish enclave in northern Syria has been under fire from the Turkish army since January 20.
The foreign volunteers may be a motley crew, but they can nevertheless be broken down into three main groups: ex-military, a majority of whom are English-speaking and generally far-right hardliners; far-left activists, including Communists, Marxists, Libertarians and Antifa (anti-fascist) – principally Greeks, Germans and Italians; and miscellaneous adventurers with backgrounds neither military nor activist but with sundry and surprising profiles that include a Hollywood actor, a British banker and a Canadian fashion model.
The Turkish offensive, dubbed Operation Olive Branch, changed the nature of the fight: Alongside the Kurds, these foreign volunteers are no longer fighting the IS group but the sovereign state of Turkey. The composition of their ranks has become more homogenised and now largely consists of the far-left “revolutionaries” who stayed on.
>“The humanists, former soldiers and adrenaline-seeking adventurers became scarcer, giving way to the ideologues,” said Guillaume Corneau-Tremblay, a political scientist working for the Canadian government.
>Director Of Oscar-Nominated Aleppo Doc Wants His Film To Serve As Witness
This winter, the Syrian government regained control over the entire city of Aleppo. For years before that, it was the largest urban stronghold of anti-regime rebels. Over those years, there were countless government bombings, and the city was reduced to rubble.
The documentary Last Men In Aleppo, by Syrian filmmaker Feras Fayyad, takes viewers inside the city. "I grew up in the countryside of Aleppo," he says. "And Aleppo — it's my city, where I know every single street and every single store."
In 2015 and 2016, Fayyad and his crew followed a group of self-appointed rescue workers called White Helmets. The film has been nominated for an Oscar in the documentary category, making it the first Syrian film to receive that honor.
>Trump appears to contradict State Department by saying the US is in Syria to 'get rid of ISIS and to go home'
President Donald Trump appeared to contradict his own State Department during a press conference on Friday by saying that the US is in Syria to defeat ISIS and then leave.
"We're there for one reason: to get ISIS and get rid of ISIS and to go home," Trump said during a press conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. "We're not there for any other reason."
In January, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson outlined five goals for the US in Syria — to defeat ISIS and al-Qaida, resolve the conflict between the Syrian regime and people, to curb Iranian influence, to create conditions so that refugees can safely return, and to create a Syria free of weapons of mass destruction.
Tillerson also said that the US seeks to resolve the conflict between the Syrian regime and people through UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which works towards a free Syrian election that Washington believes will peacefully get rid of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
What is known about Wagner? In June 2017 the US Treasury added Wagner PMC to a long list of Russian individuals and entities subject to sanctions because of their involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
The PMC "has recruited and sent soldiers to fight alongside separatists in eastern Ukraine", the US Treasury said.
The US also identified Dmitry Utkin as Wagner's "founder and leader" and placed him on the list.
>Wagner is estimated to have as many as 2,500 men in Syria.
Its officers serving in Syria are reported to earn up to 300,000 roubles (£3,800; $5,300) a month.
What about the Russian debacle on 7 February? Unnamed US intelligence sources quoted by the Washington Post say Mr Prigozhin was in close contact with the Kremlin in the run-up to the assault on the Syrian Democratic Forces base in Deir al-Zour region. The force is said to have crossed the River Euphrates and shelled the base close to Khursham, a short distance from highly-prized oil fields.
>Amid unconfirmed reports that more than 100 Russians had been killed, the Kremlin denied that any regular Russian military forces had been involved. It admitted only that there had been "several dozen" Russian casualties, but gave no further details.

>Pentagon Will Not Confirm Russian Stealth Fighters Deployed to Syria A Pentagon spokesman on Thursday questioned reports that Russia has deployed advanced stealth fighter jets to Syria, saying the U.S. military could not confirm their presence and that “deconfliction” strategy for the U.S. coalition would not change in any event. “The addition of fifth-generation fighters into Syria would certainly not be in keeping with Russia’s announced force drawdown,” said Defense Department spokesman Eric Pahon.

>Trump blasts Russia's actions in Syria as 'a humanitarian disgrace'
Trump blasted Russia, Iran and the Syrian government on Friday for their military campaigns in Syria during a press conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
"What Russia, and what Iran and what Syria have done recently is a humanitarian disgrace," Trump said. "What those three countries have done to people over a short period of time is a disgrace."
In early January, Russia and the Syrian regime increased its bombing runs in the rebel-held areas of Idlib province and Eastern Ghouta, where 250 civilians alone were killed in 48 hours earlier this week.
"No words will do justice to the children killed, their mothers, their fathers and their loved ones," the UN recently said in a statement. "Do those inflicting the suffering still have words to justify their barbaric acts?"
so the kids propaganda started to catch on websites now

>‘Publicly hang & slice him to death’: S. Korean MPs want North’s delegate killed
More than 70 South Korean lawmakers are calling for the leader of the North’s Olympic delegation to be publicly hanged and “sliced to death.” The demands came at a protest outside the presidential Blue House in Seoul Friday. North Korean General Kim Yong Chol will lead an eight-member delegation that will attend the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang Olympics Sunday to kick off a three-day visit. The former spymaster is widely believed to have coordinated a series of attacks against the South, including the torpedo attack which sank the Republic of Korea Navy Pohang-class corvette, killing 46 crew. Pyongyang has repeatedly denied responsibility for the incident.
"Kim Yong Chol is a diabolical war criminal who attacked the South... He deserves death by hanging in the street," the party's parliamentary floor leader Kim Sung-tae said in a statement, as cited by AFP. "Even if the heavens split in two, we cannot allow such a heinous criminal – who must be sliced to death – to be invited to the Olympics closing ceremony.”
>Palestinian who died after beating by Israeli troops 'may have died from tear-gas inhalation' – IDF
However, Israel's military said in a Friday statement that troops used "riot dispersal means adjacent to the area where the suspect was held, and it appears [he] was exposed to gas which may have caused his death." It also said that troops "used force in order to subdue the suspect," and that, although shots were fired towards him, he was "most likely not hit." An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to say what the use of force entailed.
The Israeli military also said that some 50 Palestinians "threw firebombs and rocks and rolled burning tires" at troops during the clashes. It added that Saradeeh had been armed with an iron rod and ran towards soldiers in an attempt to strike them.
However, Ismail al-Masri, a relative of Saradeeh, told the official Palestinian news agency WAFA that soldiers simply began beating the 33-year old "as soon as he approached his uncle's house to check why the army was raiding it."
