Especially the fat ones though, it shows they have a greedy nature beyond the norm. Also laziness beyond the norm, they will fuck you over not even to save themselves, but for a chance to secure an easy life for themselves. The foreman in the mine was a fatty too.

Endou also had to pay his own loan sharks. He still probably took more than he shoild have, but not that much.

He took everything needed to repay the loan sharks plus his take and 180 mil on top of that as his third or the partnership.

He didn't do anything wrong by taking the money Kaiji signed to but to claim it was moral because the loan sharks somehow account into it is just plain objectively false. He took it because he could and because he wanted it.

Just finished Kaiji and want to get into Akagi, do I have to know Mahjong is played or do they explain it in the manga?

They explain the rules in it. But while you'll get the general idea of "Akagi is bluffing", "Akagi is being a mad man", "someone has a really strong hand which is dangerous", you wont entirely grasp the meaning of what the characters are doing and why it's really genius.

I advice reading the rules readmanga.today/tobaku-datenroku-kaiji/7.5/all-pages and playing a bit of mahjong on www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html before watching Akagi for a better experience, but you don't HAVE to.
