What does a space elevator matter?

Rotating orbital skyhook is far easier to build and accomplish the same thing, my autistic friend.

I had an idea that was based on the rings seen in stargate where a stack of them can be magnetically coupled by superconductive materials and the space inside would be the elevator "shaft". Of course the platform must have a self-contained environment and also be of the same superconductive material but this way the magnetic flux takes the brunt of the force instead of a meta-material that doesn't exist, yet.

Practical alternative is to build megacities which rise at least 100s of miles above and use those as bases for sky elevators.

It matters because the colonization of space is the only way we're going to survive as a species (european races especially). We've just about maxed out the limitations of rocket technology, and the only way we're going to be able to get enough people/supplies into orbit in order to effectively colonize space is by having some kind of system that doesn't rely on rockets.

Skyhooks are actually the most efficient means of accomplishing this, but space elevators are a close second.
