How do you determine if someone is white?

I’ve seen plenty of mutts who consider themselves white but Europeans wouldn’t.

Is white just a subjective term or is there actual specifications other than “I think they look white”?

If your grandpa had a negro wife but everyone else of your ancestors is white I doubt it would make you non white

I'd rather say that the term should be "ethnically European". This can usually be determined by the colour of your eyes when you are born. Most of people born with majority of European ancestry are born with blue eyes that over the years change colour. For example I was born with blonde hair and blue eyes, but gradually they darkened and I now have light brown hair with dark green eyes. That's if we're talking genetics, if you're talking about "white culture" or who is culturally white, you are talking about European culture, and anyone who grew up in and adheres to European culture. You can be Ethnically European yet still be part of a different culture, best example of that are chechens.

I remember years ago, I was in Egypt with a friend of mine who was a black guy, but he was born and raised in France. We were talking with an Egyptian man and my black French friend made some comment about how Egyptians were racist to him and the Egyptian said something like "There's no racists here, we're all equal, the whites and the blacks."

The guy referred to himself as "white", but he looked like your typical Arab: Brown skin, black hair. This confused me so I said "If you're white then what am I?"

He said "You're an American" then I said "Yeah, but he's French. Is he black or is he French?" and he said "He's black."

Feeling confused yet again, I asked "So, if I weren't from America, but from here in Egypt, what would I be?"

He said "Then you'd be white."

To this day, I remember that conversation. In that man's head, him and I are the same people, separated by nationality whereas blacks are blacks no matter where they're from.

I'm not sure if all Arabs think they're the same as whites or if that one particular guy was just fucking crazy, but it definitely stuck with me even after all these years.
