What was the area like where you grew up as a kid?
For me the area was friendly, no crime, and white British, then my family sold up everything and move to the countryside/Australia.
I returned the other day to have a drive around the old area and in only ten years the entire street is now Muslim, infact the entire city of 1.1million people is now only 53% White British and that was in 2011.
Does anyone else have similar stories? White people moving out of areas being replaced by immigrants?
My city had only (1) nigger when I was a kid. 20 years later lots of arab youth, immigrants, some niggers too.
But this place has gone to shit in many other ways too. Idyllic almost country-like suburbs with many small stores. All the small stores closed, only huge megamarkets left and they opened one of the biggest malls in nordic countries last year and its full of immigrants. Arab youth hanging out at the mall etc.

I grew up in Rotterdam, Netherlands. I've seen colored people as long as I can remember. That's been the plan for a while now - move back, get a job at one of the colleges there, start bringing some serious research bucks into the city and use that to leverage myself into a position to influence city politics and start undoing some of the damage. I'll see what I can do for the rest of Eastern Iowa as well.

You don't need to run for mayor or a congressional seat or anything, just sitting on a zoning board or a city council can give you the ability to start pushing for changes.

JESUS that takes me back. My family used to go to the mall once or twice a month and just window shop. It was fun. And then when I was in high school the arcade opened and goddamn, I blew through my saved allowances in like a week. Worth it though, made a bunch of friends playing Street Fighter.
Then the city added a public transit stop. Within three years the number of muggings, pickpockets, and car break-ins skyrocketed, the movie theater closed, most of the nice stores shut down. Today there's only like a half a dozen major stores and I think a Planet Fitness or something bought out like the entire back half of the building.
I think my area is pretty much the same as when I was growing up, pretty low crime, mostly white (as far as London goes) and generally a nice place to live.

Grew up on the border between Texas and Mexico. I lived in a wealthy area of South Florida where there was virtually no crime. Occasionally there would be a sad event like a car crash or a suicide but no large-scale crimes I had to worry about as a kid.

North Idaho was amazing in the 90's.
I grew up in a very white town in Napa Valley CA. There was a significant Mexican population because of migrant farm workers that worked the vineyards, but other than that it was a very upscale neighborhood with mostly white folk.
I think balkanization is likely in our future, but that itself might be for the best. I do have faith that a new and better world will be born from the corpse of the old. Egalitarianism will no longer hold us back and we can reach greater heights then we thought possible. Rather then merely trying to survive as we do now

My grandfather was the pastor of a church in a small town. Everyone kinda knew everyone in a way. Everyone knew someone related to another person, but at any rate, it was a pretty simple time in the 90's. Church was like a family thing too, it was a large part of my upbringing. We rode bikes across town to my grandma's house in the summer time, and play NES or cards. She had a tree house in the back yard overlooking a river. We'd go see one of my uncles, and he had a large yard with willow tree's all around, it was like an arboretum. We'd go down to the pond and fish, do all the kid things. This place is small too, maybe 5,000 people now. We'd get excited about seeing the city crew put up Christmas decorations, really simple things that stick with you.
All of that is changed now. Few people speak English here, my great uncles church turned into a Mexican church after he retired. I don't know the people anymore, and none of them know me. Why should migrant gypsies know me. I can't drive through town without hearing annoying heavy bass, and that stupid fucking stare Mexicans give, like I'm the one who doesn't belong here. Mexican music all the time, all the shops are in Spanish. These fucking rats replaced our spring and summer festivals, which weren't too big, into menudo cook off's and Cinco de Mayo. All of the older families are either dead or moved somewhere else. This place is turning into a low income favela, and since I don't own the properties, there's nothing I can do about it. It's something else to watch was a really nice and pleasant rural setting, this quintessential American 90's era, vanish right in front of you and leave nothing recognizable.

Maybe so. Never been in Stockholm myself. It's not just about geographical distance, although that helps. It's more about difference in quality of life, and the ability to influence it.
