I dropped it too, too boring and dull. It had a bunch of rookies in the cast, and no Akino/Yoko Kano, so it was dead on arrival. Kawamori didn't even design the mecha this time. It didn't feel like an Aquarion.

Kawamori wanted to pull the twist in the original, but was reigned in by the others working on it. That's why there's some vague hints towards it in the first half that went nowhere.
When he did Evol, there was no one to reign him in, and considering he was working with Okada, she probably encouraged him.

But honestly, I wouldn't have been mad if they had made Fudo the villain he actually is. Instead, he gets called out once and gets away with everything he did. He would have made an amazing antagonist, manipulating everyone into killing each other and blaming it all on someone else. And Mykage wasn't even killed, just sent away to cause destruction somewhere else. What a waste.
