Baseball is a bad analogy because the materials are so different. Steel beams are ductile and cement is crumbly, where as wood is flexible and hard, but hardly ductile at all.
Similarly, a baseball is a bad analogy for the plane for the same reasons.
A better way to look at it on a small scale would be a small aluminum tube and a thin section of reinforced concrete. Sure, by hand you might not be able to damage the concrete substantially and the aluminum will always be horribly damaged, but shoot the aluminum out of a slingshot and it crack and break the concrete.
