Can anybody explain the cultural basis behind the prevalence of incest themes especially between brother and sister in anime? there seems to be at least one if not more shows a season that have this as a major plot point, and other shows will play upon it if a character has a sibling of the opposite sex. I cant seem to wrap my head around why this is a thing or how it relates to Japanese culture and its differences to western culture. Thats not to say this doesn't pop up in western media, Game Of Thrones and Arrested Development both have incest in them albeit used very differently but both of those shows us it as a way of showing a character as morally bankrupt and as a comedic element that the parents are actively trying to stop respectively. To be honest it turns me off to shows that I would otherwise be interested in, and any information to help me get a deeper understanding of why it is a thing would be appreciated. General discussion on it and how its affecting the the industry are also welcome in this thread.

I don't feel like I know enough about Japanese culture to comment on how they perceive incest, but I'd like to point out that there is incest in both "Star Wars" and "Back to the Future". Both are pretty old at this point but also insanely popular and considered to be cultural touchstones.
That being said, I generally agree with you OP, I'm not sure why there's such a prevalence of incest in anime and it does tend to turn me off shows unless it's somehow related to the plot.

Incest is bad because of fucked up genetic defects that have a higher prevalence due to it, not because of "morality" or whatever label you want to substitute it for.
First, incest is just a fetish/preference, just like traps, lolis, tsundere or ojou-samas with drills, and this industry tends to be omnipandering, so token sister character is a given.
Second, target audience of late-night anime consists mostly of social outcasts who don't give a damn about things being socially acceptable. If you think about it, the site you're on right now isn't the best representation of Western society either.
Third, in Western culture incest has somewhat greater social stigma than in Japan, since unlike with other deviations, it wasn't dismantled by progressive movements (yet?) and our culture is very anti-incest. It's not like your average Japanese is a serial sisterfucker though.
And last but not the least, actual incest is quite rare in anime. Most of the time its just teasing and pandering. Even more, current censorship laws in Japan greatly discourage publishing works with actual incest, which is why many series use the NBR cop-out.
On a less related note, Westerners are quite funny. Deep down inside every "tolerant" and "progressive" normalfag lives a good, old reactionist imperialist that will kick down your door and tell you to stop liking things he doesn't like if he finds something that isn't on his Things To Tolerate list provided by his overlords.
