We need these to validate quantum theories which then can be transferred to material science applications.
For evxaple, scientists have been developing nex-gen electronics called "spintronics" which utilize the magnetic force of the angular momentum of particles to do work. This will lead to more compact and vastly more energy efficient electronics.
They are just data gathering machines, its up to another layer of engineers and scientists to find practical applications of the results.
Just because most people can't interprit it, doesn't mean its a waste of time, you have to specialize in it in college to be good at quantum mechanics, everyone else just has a vague idea of what it is.
