Here's my take on a Made in Abyss story. Imagine a movie version that's more atmospheric, mostly dialogue-less, following a white whistle, let's say Srajo, and his son (think Lone Wolf and Cub) descending to the bottom where the contrast of Srajo's stoic and calculated personality is pitted against the child's sense of wonder and vulnerability. The two develop a deep bond as the child undergoes disillusionment towards the horrors of the Abyss and Srajo regains his sense of humanity as opposed to giving in to the madness of the Abyss and develops feelings of protection for his son. However this only furthers the tragic element at the core of the story in which their inevitable demise comes to a forefront.

It was not explained but I'm pretty sure he just Zoaholic'd Nanachi at some point. He doesn't take over her body out of respect and fatherly love, but can still look at what she is doing, much like with other praying hands.

It sucks that they didn't show "Taste: Irredeemable".
I also didn't like how, by nature of being animated, Reg's processing of the flavour took longer and therefore felt like it was building up to a "it's delicious!" joke. Which they still could have made work if they made the "taste: irredeemable" panel a snap-cut reaction shot to subvert the buildup.
