>Breaking: Elite Syrian Army forces snatch another militant stronghold in east Damascus
BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:15 P.M.) – Moments ago, military-affiliated sources confirmed that elite forces of the Syrian Army had seized the militant stronghold town of Beit Naem in Damascus’ East Ghouta region.
The operation to take Beit Naem was carried out by Republican Guard assault units and represents capitalization on Syrian Army gains at Tal Firzat and Hawsh As-Salhiyah earlier on in the week.
Prior to its capture by Syrian forces, the town had been under the control of the Jaysh al-Islam rebel group for many years.
The fall of Beit Naem to government troops means that a dangerous gap has now been ripped open in militant defense lines across the southern sector of the East Ghouta pocket.
In the days to come, the Syrian Army will likely use Beit Naem as a staging point to launch additional attacks against insurgent groups towards the towns of Hawsh ash-Ash’ari and Muhammadiyah.
>Pictures: Syrian Army spies taunt Islamists in east Damascus by showing off presence in major rebel stronghold
BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:35 P.M.) – Syrian military spies have struck once again, this time flaunting photos of their presence in the militant-controlled district city of Douma in Damascus’ East Ghouta region.
The development is highly reminiscent of what happened during the Syrian Army’s recent operation in the country’s northwest where intelligence agents disclosed their presence (not themselves obviously) at a number of jihadist stronghold towns and cities across Idlib and other provinces.
The existence of Syrian government agents in Douma city shows how Syrian military intelligence has also penetrated the ranks of rebel groups in East Ghouta in addition to northwest Syria.
Whilst the actions recently displayed in Douma represent psychological operations, Syrian military spies often carry out more conventional tasks such as providing intelligence on insurgent movements, gatherings and bases, conducting assassinations and relaying coordinates for airstrikes by Russian and Syrian warplanes against important rebel targets.
>Hundreds Flee Eastern Ghouta as Aid Delivery Stalls
Hundreds of people in Eastern Ghouta fled the advancing Syrian regime forces on Sunday amid the United Nations’ condemnation that the violence has continued unabated despite a ceasefire deal.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based organization which reports on the war, estimated that between 300 to 400 families had fled, adding that regime bombardment was focused on the town of Mesraba.
Regime forces are thrusting into the besieged rebel enclave from its eastern edge in an apparent bid to split it in two - a pattern of attack used repeatedly by Damascus and its allies in the war entering its eighth year.
Orient TV, which supports the opposition to Bashar al-Assad, said advances by regime forces had triggered large-scale displacement. People were seeking shelter in areas closer to the center of the Eastern Ghouta, said the resident, who estimated thousands were on the move.
>Attacks on Syria's Ghouta 'unacceptable' collective punishment - U.N.
Violence has escalated in eastern Ghouta, despite a U.N. ceasefire call a week ago, and the bombing of the besieged Syrian enclave represents a“simply unacceptable” punishment of civilians, the United Nations said on Sunday.
Nearly 600 people have been reported killed and more than 2,000 injured in air and ground-based strikes since Feb. 18, U.N. regional humanitarian coordinator Panos Moumtzis said, noting that mortar shells fired from the rebel-held enclave into the capital Damascus had killed and injured scores of civilians.
“Instead of a much needed reprieve, we continue to see more fighting, more death, and more disturbing reports of hunger and hospitals being bombed. This collective punishment of civilians is simply unacceptable,” Moumtzis said in a statement.

Jaberi-Ansari had already visited Syria in early summer and mid-winter.
>Greece's coast guard seizes $18.5mn worth of cannabis from fishing vessel
Greece's coast guard has seized 1.3 tons of cannabis hidden aboard a foreign-flagged fishing vessel off the Island of Crete. The cannabis has a value of €15 million (US$18.5 million). The seizure followed a three-day operation which was launched after French customs informed Greek authorities of the suspect ship ‘Celine Star’, which was potentially carrying illegal cargo. The vessel, which sailed from Syria, attempted to flee but was escorted to the port of Lerapetra, where the cannabis was discovered. The captain and four-member crew were arrested. The operation involved four Coast Guard patrol vessels and two planes, one of which belonged to the European border and coast guard agency Frontex.
>Al-Qaeda affiliate claims responsibility for Burkina Faso attack An Al-Qaeda affiliate has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack on the French embassy and the army headquarters in the capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, in which 16 people were killed and 80 others were injured. Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), a Mali-based Islamist group, said eight of its members carried out the coordinated twin attacks, speaking via the Mauritanian news outlet Alakhbar. JNIM is believed to have carried out multiple attacks against both civilian and military targets across the western Sahel region in recent years. The attacks were reportedly in response to the killing of one of the group’s leaders, Mohamed Hacen al-Ancari, in a recent raid carried out by French forces. France has maintained a force of approximately 4,000 troops in its former colonies across the Sahel region since an incursion by Islamic militants in 2013.

BAHRAIN ARRESTS 116 ON TERROR CHARGES >gulfbusiness.com/bahrain-arrests-116-terror-suspects/ >The group were planning to target Bahraini officials, members of the security forces and vital oil installations, Bahrain News Agency said >Security forces in Bahrain have arrested 116 terror suspects that were part of a terrorist cell supported by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, state-run Bahrain News Agency reported on Saturday. >The individuals are suspected of crimes including planning and executing terror attacks and manufacturing, storing and transporting explosives. >Bahrain said its investigation revealed that 48 of the 116 members arrested had received training at Revolutionary Guard facilities in Iran and affiliated locations in Iraq and Lebanon. FNR: Bahrain has continued its crackdown on terror suspects, arresting 116 individuals it believes are linked to various terror groups, many of whom are accused of being Iranian-backed and trained. Earlier in the year, 60 Shi'ite Bahrainis were arrested, with two sentenced to death, and 56 sentenced to prison, ranging from five years to life. Bahrain has seen a rise in sectarian hostility since the 2011 uprising during the Arab Spring, as the Shi'ite majority clash with the Sunni ruling class. The Bahraini state has become increasingly backed by the KSA, as fears of Iranian meddling creep into the government.
