I'm not sure why they didn't use the car to escape, it is possible the vehicles were having issues. They tried to call for helicopter rescue, but given the location and the nature of their work, they weren't going to get it in time, even if there was any rescue near by.

Since then Saffoniyah and Al Riyan has been taken aswell as Beit Nayem which has the bridges opened up and South West Ghouta ready to be attacked by government forces.
