Is alita a complete abnormality in the manga genre?
It's pretty unkown in japan but still has a niche audience, it's running for almost 30 years now and it's insanely popular in the west, though rather with a non imageboard going audience and more like with normal comic fans.
The internet fandom for the manga is tiny yet it has a huge international fanbase.

He's really got his shit together art and storyboard wise ever since he began Mars Chronicle. I enjoy his work so damn much.
There's only one proper forum dedicated to the manga and it has like 20 regular posters and threads on Sup Forums happen like once a year.
Meanwhile the physical copies of the manga are bestsellers in the west.
Mars Chronicle is really up there with the original, while more than half of last order is just "meh".
I'm re-reading LO at the moment and its really hit and miss. The entire ZOTT stuff is so fucking shit, but everything else is still good.
So glad mars chronicle has none of the tournament bullshit and is straight up scifi again.

Chronicle started slow too but now with this treasure hunt and backstory reveals it's building up to be even better than the original Zalem stories. If everything works out we might get the space war in a couple of years.
Theres jim cameron making a fucking movie of it and the print editions sell like hotcakes.
They're rereleasing a hardcover delxue reprint in a few months.

Heh I read the original a few months ago and then started LO. Read the first chaper and I didn't really like how the characters design changed and really didn't care about the first chapter. So I said fuck it and just read the last chapter and I'm glad I did because wtf.
The first arc of LO is pretty golden.
People just had an issue with the ZOTT dragging on for more than 10 years.
The entire criticism of LO is the DBZ style fighting tournament, so if you dropped it after the first chapter you didn't even get to the part people hated.
The first 10 or so chapters are pretty much in tune with the original.

the thing I disliked the most was how they changed the personality and characterization of alita.
in the original, pre-memory loss she was a brainwashed almost emotionless hardened soldier. In LO she was an insecure schoolgirl who just wnted to impress her senpai and didn't know what she was doing.
In the originl she was confident oozd mental strenght, no matter how much shit fate piled on her. In LO she's an emotional wreck with a senpai complex. At times it felt like I was reading a shitty yuri comic.

You have to understand that reading 10 years of ZOTT was a huge pain in the ass.
Everything before and after is golden though.

I'm currently re-reading LO and the alita quest arc feels so fucking good after the slow drag that was the ZOTT.

I think the ZOTT was definitely kishiro's biggest mistake.
Those 10 years where I assumed alita would stay in shonen battle tournament hell forever were pure torture, but having an entire arc with ido and figure 4 set on earth after that 10 year travesty felt like redemption.
I never got this complaint about the ZOT
Half of the arc is vampires and Alita sneaking around.
The semi-finals and finals are the only bits with excess fighting.

They are selling the Mars manga in Germany, I already thought of getting them but I feared another endless tournament or something in the middle.
I started reading alita in 1998. There was just so much more plot progression in the old books, the ZOTT literally ran for 10 years straight and wasted years of manga for a dumb tournament with annoying side characters.
Let's not forget that last order ended up giving us the nova vs ido showdown.
Mars Chronicle is 100% story focused and goes into REALLY dark places.
It tells alita's backsory on mars, something most fans have waited for longer than 20 years.
None of the time wasting tournament bullshit.
A lot of flashbacks, but they all serve a purpose.

Long story short the ending of the original manga was not what the author wanted because reasons so he had the game feature his intended ending. Plenty of stuff found their way into LO and MC.

I find the art for mars chronicles even worse than last order (at least early last order, I haven't read late in a while), and the story went from some sort of geopolitics/shonen cliché to loli torture porn which is possibly even worse. Characters like münster are just so hackneyed, he's like desty nova if you removed all charisma, ambiguity and playfulness and replaced them with literal mustache-twirling evil. He even fucking runs around and tells you how evil he is!
Only the last 3 chapters are original material.

On Mars you meet Zouo (the final boss), a cyborg who evolved the Panzer Kunst into the Panzer Faust I think.
I think she wasn't much of a character at all, she was either long dead or a brain in a jar and only served to introduce the disease.
Zouo has four arms.
Considering how much of mars chronicle corresponds with martian memory we might see updated versions of those characters in the future.

yeah, I actually found it pretty interesting too and a clear improvement over the rest of the manga, but it's still far too edgy. The original series was never this cartoonishly grimdark, even makakus backstory pales compared to what happens in mars chronicles. Makaku was just a sewer orphan who was burnt by some punks, in mars chronicles every pov character seems have characters friendly to them either betray them or get horribly killed. Desty nova is an eccentric with no morals, Münster is an EVIL man who does EVIL THINGS. It's like a fucking cartoon.

After defeating Zouo you meet the scientist who put Gally's head into a cyborg body to have a cutie daughter. He's now a huge brain because he contacted the disease and lol reasons I think.
His reasoning for being evil is that because he was a innocent man who got so much shit that it's his turn to be so evil that the shit they did to him at least makes sense as a payback.
