What OP doesn't understand is that the shounen genre was always based around coming of age stories like Eyeshield 21 or Dragon Ball, and Hokuto no Ken was just a passing fad.

I was talking about the fad of massive muscular dudes. It wasn't much of a fad to begin with. Most other fighting anime and manga had muscular characters, but not quite as built as those in HnK. I can only think of a few series that adopted that aesthetic, like Otokojuku and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and the latter progressively abandoned it as its protagonists grew more sensible and less manly(to the point where the sixth one is a girl). Sure, when it comes to video games, HnK had a huge impact; most fighting games from that era, like Street Fighter, were openly inspired by its aesthetic and you can still feel it to this day, but anime quickly came to prefer more svelte looking male characters.

But Shinji was alpha as fuck. Sure, he chickened out a few times at the beginning and wasn't really sold into being forced to risk life and limb for the world, but he almost always eventually went to fight anyway with as much ferocity and intensitity as an alpha, which is much, much more than pussy MC does. Basically, he was socially awkward, but ultimately always went to do the good fight even if he hated the idea and didn't run away from the consequences of his actions
