After 1945, the first area of European cooperation was the European Community on Coal and Steel, which also included aluminum. Why? Because these things are required for construction and war and the Soviets were right at the border of Europe. It was absolutely paramount for Europe to not become dependent on e.g. US steel and aluminum.

If the US coal, steel and aluminum industry were to shrink to the point that America was unable to sustain its war industry and general constuction without Asian imports, it would make America dependent on foreign powers. It would mean China could effctively shut down the American infustrial military complex.

Why is Trump not making this clearer? Agriculture, steel, aluminum, military equipment, oil and gas and electricity are things that no big power should ever end up dependent on foreign countries.

Just to be clear, we are the only larger NATO member which is increasing its active soldier count and military budget. True, we are below 2 percent, but the plan is to increase things. The UK is downsizing by 25 percent, France by 10 percent, the US is stagnant with a slight reduction in active soldiers, Canada is downsizing, Australia is, Italy is broke, Spain too.

There are many books and transcripts about the discussions around the EGKS. Do some research. The Berlin air bridge in 1948 and 1949 and the Korean war really spooked leaders in Europe. This in combination with the German Wirtschaftswunder made European leaders to agree to the EGKS. Schumann said it was “to prevent war between France and Germany” because he couldn’t really say that it was the Ruskies which were the common enemy... especially because the far left in France and Italy was pretty powerful at the time.
