After reading the first Saki volume I more or less learned Japanese Mahjong basics in some random website after an hour, it's not that hard and I think it's worth it.

Google yaku, tenpai, riichi, dora, pon/kan/chii, furiten, ron/tsumo, yaku list. The hand is 4x3 (set or sequence) + pair. The game is 8 rounds, 2 times for each one to be a dealer. Or more if the dealer is good. You'll get more if you win as a dealer and also lose more. Get a mobile riichi mahjong with bots or poke this classic one gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html

These are a bit of a pain.

That doesn't really mean anything.

The reason mahjong is hard to get into for beginners is that there are a lot of stuff to memorize, like the rules, the scoring and the different yakus.

The skill cap is also incredibly high, due to all the strategy and mindgames involved.

They're annoying to memorize, the rules are alright though.

Just never open your hand and always riichi at the start, it's not like you'll start playing against humans from the get-go

You don't have to memorize them before playing, it's better to try them out as you play so you can get a good feel about them (whether or not they're possible to complete, how you can switch from one to another and so on)

Akagi is among my most rewatched series and I still don't understand mahjong at all. I'm in it for the great atmosphere and music, it's the perfect thing to watch 2AM. Knowing what's going on in the games would probably just distract my enjoyment.
