The actual game is overwhelmingly better in 2. The fixed or removed everything that I didn't like in 1, mainly a lot (A LOT) of stuff in 1 was straight up random and you had to hope that RNG won't fuck you over. Second game isn't like that and the management aspect is much more in detail too.
The most first game has going for it is the story. Anime is loosely based on 2, so the game won't tell you much new, but in 1 you can experience Ritsuko being an idol, Miki's awakening, support Chihaya when her parents divorce and she has to move out and all that stuff.

After the SP games Kubooka stopped doing the main illustrations for im@s and Kiyotaka Tamiya (pic related) took over while essentially emulating his style, he designed the Dearly Stars cast, Jupiter, and the Million Live cast. Personally I don't think they ever went full moe because the art has consistently looked a little dated compared to actual contemporary moe shows, and ironically a common complaint about Million Live is that the characters are too plain and not moe enough.
Every CG character was designed by Annin Doufu, who did album cover art, promo illustrations and outfit designs for 765 before CG started.
