Is it that time to spam HxH threads again?

Just watch the anime and make your own opinion instead of jumping on a bandwagon

Cool a thread I can piggyback on.
Would it be too blasphemous to start off on the manga where the 2011 anime ends off?

I could do it by starting with one letter.

Nope, be warned you will have to wait A LOT

O

MY

NEN

RUBBER

Hunter x Hunter is the story of a group of weird fighting kid who goes on an epic adventure to find his deadbeat dad

Along the way he runs into a variety of tests, some of strength, some of wits, many of which are life threatening

Some brutal shit happens along the way. Occasionally the perspective shifts to other more interesting characters.

If Earthbound+Dragon Quest+Jojo sounds like a winning formula to you, you should read it

Was the message of the Chimera ant arc "Humans are evil"

The message was that Togashi can't pace for shit. It's the arc that began the hiatus curse.

It's shit because Gon and Killua never even hug or hold hands.

It's not controversial, it's pretty much universally well liked. It has extremely high sales and popularity no matter the release schedule, and I can't say I've ever come across any anime related site with a majority who dislike it, or any reviewer that does either, or anywhere it has a low rating.

The only controversial thing about it is fans who think it's extremely smart and unique for battle shounen vs people who think it's just a decent battle shounen and nothing special. A lot of people come out thinking along the lines of the former, so take that as you will.

Pretty much this, but I'm willing to go a bit further and say there are pockets who fight about the 1999 vs. 2011 anime, with a good number of fags around here going at it constantly. Going out on a limb here and saying that more people have watched the 2011 anime at this point, which honestly has the advantage of better pacing throughout all the earlier arcs, but loses a lot of the darker tones that the 99 anime presents. You can choose which you prefer. I think they both have their strong points.

The series is good. It is written by a veteran battle shonen author who set out to use what he learned over the years and it definitely shows. If you ever liked YYH, you will likely enjoy HxH.

That said, if you DIDN'T like YYH you could easily like HxH. I find them quite different.

In Hunter x Hunter, there is a shotacon magician/clown who is arguably one of the strongest characters in the series and fairly important to the overall plot. His ability is called Bungee Gum, and it is the power to make his Nen (spirit energy) have the properties of both rubber and gum, that is, sticky and stretchy. He says this fairly often. Now, it's worth understanding that the whole "rubber and gum" thing was a long running joke in HxH threads for years, because it's funny and, again, the Clown says it like a catch phrase. The joke was ALWAYS that you can't beat rubber and gum, it can do anything, because it's rubber and gum, can't beat that, nope.

Now, in one of the most recent chapters (and by recent I mean, it happened a year ago but there's also been a year long hiatus since then) where the clown was in a death match with someone he's been trying to kill since the 90's, he fucking loses! He gets stomped and styled on so bad he dies. But guess what? Rubber and fucking gum, he uses this ability to knead his heart and lungs post mortem and bring himself back to life. And he does so by evoking a contract with his Nen (which is an established mechanic of Nen in the series), and his evocation was translated as so: "O' my rubber Nen"

This single handedly took a long running joke to an extreme no one thought possible, I mean talk about meme magic, and completely subverted all expectations for how Hisoka's character arc would develop, as well as other more extreme consequences to the plot like killing off 2 members of the main group of antagonists. The meme has been a little forced in recent times but it's worth understanding just how far back this shit goes, and just pivotal this single phrase will be in the plot of HxH

No.

I'd add to make sure to read Level E as well, which I would also say is far removed from YYH in tone, atmosphere, characters and so on.

Both shows have core elements that make HxH what it is, both back then and currently.

O

you sometimes get some stories between the hiatuses

Hisoka can make condoms from nen?

It was more like "ruthlessness and selfishness are positive traits that allow humanity to triumph over socialism".

Definitely, but he turns off the nen on his dick the second he's about to pop just cause he can.

I did the same and all you elitists can suck my dick thats an offer

Oh good.
Second question: Why is Pitou best girl?

HxH is just writing and saying done.

That's the best way to describe it. It's evident that the author does not put thought or map out future events other than "that would be nice".

This style of writing has pros and cons but mostly it just happens that the characters become detached and acting like synthetics and not people

Hiatus.

It sounds like you have a poor attention span.

As much as I love HxH I will say that I absolutely hate that artwork every time I see it

Hunter x Hunter is the best anime and manga ever.

A lot of idiots not paying attention and expecting other things from it. If you read it nice and thorough, you'll see everything has a reason to happen.

well put lad

I'm sorry, she is a he

no, the message was "don't worry about killing off characters, just only show half their abilities, so you can claim they used a rebirth ability offscreen"
Actually no, the message was "don't worry about making consequences for your main character too severe, just write in a magical little girl that is like infinite dragonballs"

Stop crying.

nice arguement

Did you have one to start? That'd help me provide a counter in the first place.

Well that complicates things, there can't be two best boys.

This

You're gonna have to deal with it sooner or later, get used to it now. These are the truthiest truths to HxH. Pitou is male, Kurapika is female, Shizuku is a specialist, and Phinks is a founding member.

>a magical little girl that is like infinite dragonballs
This.

The things I can't stand about it are far greater than the things I enjoy about it.

Such as....

And Uvo's black.

How can you say this dumb motherfucker is best boi when Morel was right there shredding his shit, user.

That actually makes a lot of sense

Excuse me, Knuckle is best boy

Daisy Dukes
THIGHS
I find dumb motherfuckers cute

>The joke was ALWAYS that you can't beat rubber and gum, it can do anything, because it's rubber and gum, can't beat that, nope.
But can it beat the cock

Nobody can beat the cock

>Manga art is nothing to write home about, especially if you somehow end up reading the Shounen Jump scans. I believe Dark Continent has better overall quality, but that's at least 340 chapters in.
>Over-explaining things, as obvious or as irrelevant as they are (or explaining things that could have been portrayed thought the use of good art). See: Greed Island's Card Mumbo Jumbo or Chimera Ant's palace assault. This is arguably a Shounen trope.

Keep in mind I'm not very fond of Shounen in general, but I wanted to give Hunter x Hunter a try and I'm actually pleasantly surprised by:

>Characters in general. How the 'good guys' break out of their mold (Gon and Killua, especifically) and the great "humanization", for lack of a better term, of the villains. I think all the villains are great except maybe for the Bomber, which they were forced to fight because there was no other way to go about it. Generally, the idea that there's no good people or evil people, just people (kind of an exaggeration, but you get the idea).
>Unusual/unpredictable story structure. Not as blatant as I make it sound, but I like how some situations occur and later lead to some other situation that could have been foreshadowed or not. This is not always good, but heh.

Yes, the bad things are enough to scare away someone like me from reading this, especially in the beginning. But there's definitely something good here, despite all the shit they give it.

Not to mention the 2011 is fucking great. I really enjoy the music and visuals, especially on the popular scenes. Nettero vs Meruem (the ending, at least) is a scene I really enjoy.

I would argue the anime sticking so close to the manga, almost word for word, damaged my enjoyment of it. But I can't condemned it for being so faithful without looking like a retard.

tl;dr my glass is half-empty.

I get it, but it doesn't appeal to me.

>he doesn't like genthuru

You won't get an unbiased answer here since HxH is Sup Forums favorite anime.

If you come for the fights Naruto has better.
If you come for the characters One piece has better.
If you come for melodramatic scenes for edgy 20s year olds than HxH is for you

So can we give Leorio for his emitter ability to be able to be a kick ass doctor. Even ging praised his ability. Code named ultra sound.

How were the Chimera Ants anything near socialism, with their super strict class structure?

What about a cock made of rubber and gum?

Why are you worrying about 'bias' while making completely wrong arguments? HxH fights actually have strategy, and the characters actually develop and have some depth. You picked the most retardedly inappropriate series to compare it to, because Naruto and One Piece fail at those specific things.

>If you come for the fights Naruto has better
I can't think of a single fight in Naruto that surpasses any of Morel fights. I admit that fights in HxH are either really good or utter shit.

Morel could have lost if cheetuh punched him inside his nen instead of both waiting for plot convenience.

>If you come for the world building One Piece has better
>If you come for ninja wizards Naruto has better

Fixed that for you

...and?

it's retarded and wasn't explained (there is no explanation anyway)

it was just shit

Really dude?HxH has a better plot but we can all agree that Naruto has better fights on average...
The last naruto vs sasuke fight,Kakashi vs obito, kakashi vs kazuku, itachi vs sasuke

So, as someone who doesn't read shonen, even really good shonen, I want to take this opportunity to ask, what is the story of that giant frog?
That image is the cover of volume 1, or something like that, it's an image you see fairly frequently in any case. But no one ever talks about the frog. You never see the frog in any other pictures. Is it his pet? Is it his mount? Is it something that only appears in the early chapters, and then is never heard from again? I've always wondered.

Cheetuh made an ability that required him to not be touched, why would he punch Morel and deactivate it? Morel just saw through him and his personality and made a plan according to the situation.

Sometimes a frog is just a fuckin frog

they didn't explain that, see how shit it is? at least in the anime

You could say the same about Gon's fisherman rod and killua's skateboard

The whole point of the game was tag. Morel had to touch him, not the other way around.

Are you intentionally being an idiot?

It's not really that simple.
It's more humans are a tenacious bunch that will always find a way to rise on top.

Any nen user can make any one hit ko ability by using a restriction like "worse than being dead" ... nen is an asspull power by any means

If Cheetuh punched him, that would have risked being catched. You don't make an ability that requires you to not be catched and then risk to be catched. If just being touched counts as "being catched" for his ability, which is entirely possible (and very likely, since when he was forced to attack he made up a Nen crossbow instead of attacking directly), then Cheetuh couldn't even punch him without deactivating his ability. Morel was obviously going to defend against him if he tried to attack, which would lead to a close combat situation that would render Cheetuh's advantage with his ability totally useless. Cheetuh would have won anyway if Morel didn't do anything. Cheetuh had no reason to attack Morel, and since his ability draws from his personality, he wouldn't feel like doing it anyway.

>on average...
No.You are posting the same fight that every single Narutard reposts thinking it proves the quality of the series somehow. Naruto the manga can hardly take credit for the good animation, otherwise the fights were forgettable and ruined by powerlevels over time.

HxH has more memorable fights because they're sporadic and varied (in tone, length, etc), with more interesting abilities and strategies and more unpredictable outcomes. Nen overall is a better system.

They're just animals Togashi puts in the covers next to one of the main four. They hold some sort of esoteric symbolism related to the characters.

Watch this fight then you absolute mongoloid.

youtube.com/watch?v=UMnkU8huLtY

So, only crazy people would do that, who would gain power for one fight just to be a vegetable for the rest of your life

If the abilities are over explained, people bitch about walls of text. While the rules of the game are barely laid out and things are left for the reader/watcher to deduce, people bitch about things not being explained.

>muh MC IS SOOO CRAZY AND DERANGED LIKE ME BECAUSE I BROWSE 4chanhuNS XD

That's a fight with the smartest Character, even HxH's Dumbest characters use tactics to win fights

>World building
This is the thing I hate most about HxH fans. They tout it's amazing world building, but it seems lackluster and incredibly surface-level.

>Trust us, there's a bunch of crazy shit out there
cool show me

>Look at this weird animal!
ok?

>Killua's family is famous
that's not world building

>This world has cities!
...

>And a video game world!
But this isn't anything. It's an island that people happen to be fighting on. It's also completely isolated.

>North Korea ravaged by mutant ants?
Referencing real-world places isn't interesting and an enemy made from nothing doesn't establish anything. Cool, it's an interesting antagonistic force, but it's self-contained. There's no vistas, players, or history behind it. It's just an interesting enemy in an uninteresting location.

>What if we... ZOOM OUT!
...

All right, curiosity satisfied. Carry on with your discussion.

Pitou is the best girl and there will never be any other as perfect as she was.

let me tell you

about hunter hunter

What about this fight
youtube.com/watch?v=9WLMBdARxB8

Morel explains it at the end of the fucking fight. Everything is fucking explained all the time, how dumb are you to not understand what is going on at any given moment?

anyone else but you can understand it

It's that delicate balance between conveying crucial and relevant info to the reader and Togashi being an autist.

But hey, that's why we love him.

Why are you ignoring my counter argument and not using your brain to counter what I said, like a resealable person would

>(or explaining things that could have been portrayed thought the use of good art). See: Greed Island's Card Mumbo Jumbo

There's no way to portray the abilities of the Greed Island cards through art unless you want them to use the abilities first which is just stupid. That would be like if in Yugioh they didn't explain how cards worked but just played the cards down all the time. It's a comic book not a fucking Bearenstein Bears book where every page has to have less than 5 words.

No, the point is that crazy characters ruin their life. Like Gon throwing away his future Nen for a futile fight, or Kurapika who's going to eventually run out of lifeforce with his red eyes.

I'm a manga reader but I've never read any of the "big" shounen manga. Is HxH the one to start with?

>girl

Yeah why not. You can always drop it if it doesn't get you.

Rock lee is drunk, he is not using a tactic, it's just his fighting instinct. It still is a good fight though it reminds me of that one Jackie Chan movie

if you don't explain your shit and make your readers figure it out then you are lazy fuck

now you will come saying "hxh doesn't spoonfeed people" "hxh is for smart people who can figure things out" "hxh is intellectual shounen"

>watching long as hell shonen series instead of reading them

Let's admit that Togashi goes kinda overboard with his explanations all the time. I liked it, but I understand that some people can get bored from reading a card catalog. It was really autistic. He should manage some way to explain the abilities, having things like Chrollo laying down every single ability he will use is very anticlimatic.
