>Syrian Army on the verge of encircling Islamist militants in key east Damascus stronghold – Map update
BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:07 A.M.) – On Monday, the Syrian Army scored a critical breakthrough against jihadist militants on the outskirts of the district town of Harasta, a key insurgent stronghold within rebel-held areas of Damascus’ East Ghouta region.
Battling it out with Islamist rebels on the northern outskirts of Harasta, elite Syrian forces of the 4th Mechanized Division rolled through several farmland areas that were laced with tunnels and trenches.
Government troops seek to capture the Al-Beiruni gas station along the main road that links Harasta to the city of Douma (located northeast of the town by about one kilometer).
Seizing the gas station will result in the de facto encirclement of rebel fighters inside Harasta; the threat of this alone may just yet push them to entirely abandon the district town (although this is yet to be seen).
The main opponents to the Syrian Army’s advance in and around Harasta are Al-Qaeda affiliate Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (better known by its former name Jabhat al-Nusra) and Syrian Brotherhood affiliate Ahrar al-Sham – both are hardline jihadist groups.

MOSCOW, March 5. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia has been quite successful in its efforts to match the status of a major weapons exporter. In 2017 the export of Russian military hardware went up for a third year running to above $15 billion.
"Russia matches high standards and confirms its status of one of the leading providers on the world weapons market," he said at a meeting of the commission on military-technical cooperation. "The export of military hardware has grown for a third year in a row to more than $15 billion."
Putin also declared that the value of weapons export contracts signed last year doubled to $16 billion.
"The scope of our military-technical cooperation keeps growing in geographic terms steadily. The number of partners has already exceeded one hundred countries," Putin said. "At the end of last year the amount of contracts signed nearly doubled to $16 billion, which took the overall value of orders for Russian weapons and equipment received to more than $45 billion," the president said.
"This means that Russia’s military-industrial complex has enough orders for the supply of cutting-edge and next-generation defense systems for several years to come," Putin said.
MOSCOW, March 5. /TASS/. Accusations from the US that Russia is allegedly failing to comply with the ceasefire provision of the UN Security Council Resolution are an ideological attack reflecting Washington’s political goal - preserving the armed potential to attempt to overthrow the government of Bashar al-Assad, Head of the Federation Council’s Commission for Information Policy and Mass Media Relations Alexey Pushkov told TASS on Monday.
White House Spokeswoman Sarah Sanders claimed on Sunday that Russia had ignored the terms of the UN resolution on ending combat actions in Syria and that led to the deaths of civilians in Eastern Ghouta. The same terrorists
"As for the substance of the issue, the US should have paid attention to the fact that the [UN Security Council] resolution does not involve the terrorist organizations that, by the way, are recognized as such by the US itself," Pushkov noted. He said he was referring, in particular, to Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham. "This is technically the renamed Jabhat al-Nusra, and changing the order of the addends does not change the sum," he went on to say. "Jabhat al-Nusra is recognized as a terrorist organization, and none of the UN resolution says warfare should be stopped against terrorists," the senator said.
MOSCOW, March 4. /TASS/. Militants in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta announced curfew for time of humanitarian pauses and outlaw the civilians’ mass rallies, Maj Gen Vladimir Zolotukhin, a representative of the Russian center for reconciliation of opposing sides in Syria, told reporters on Sunday.
"According to the information, the Center has receive, participants of the illegal armed groups in Eastern Ghouta have announced curfew for civilians for the time of humanitarian pauses," he said. "The locals, who violate these regulations, undergo public punishments."
The militants also banned mass rallies, so that the locals could not breakthrough towards the humanitarian corridor.
The sixth humanitarian pause began in Eastern Ghouta at 09:00 local time on Sunday. The militants continue holding the locals from crossing the humanitarian corridor. Only two children managed to use the corridor in the past humanitarian pauses. On Saturday, the militants’ sharpshooters fired on the humanitarian corridor, where they injured three civilians. Humanitarian corridor
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu on Monday said that on instructions from Russian President Vladimir Putin a daily humanitarian pause was introduced in Eastern Ghouta (a suburb of Damascus) from 09:00 to 14:00 local time, starting from Tuesday, February 27. In the village of Al-Wafideen, the Syrian authorities and the Russian center for reconciliation of warring sides created conditions for civilians evacuating along the only humanitarian corridor connecting Damascus and Eastern Ghouta.
The humanitarian pauses were derailed by militants in the first days, the Russian center said. Terrorists opened mortar fire on the safe exit from the area. In addition, residents are being forcibly held in Eastern Ghouta controlled by terrorists and are threatened with death for wishing to flee it.

Izvestia: Moscow ready to mediate peace talks between US, Kabul and Taliban
Russia is ready to mediate negotiations between the United States and the Taliban (banned in Russia), Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov told Izvestia, adding that this would require interest from both sides. The diplomat supported the statements of Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani about the need to negotiate with the Taliban, noting that Russian diplomatic help has a positive impact on the process. In addition, Moscow is waiting for National Security Advisor to the Afghan president Hanif Atmar, who will meet with members of the Russian Security Council in April.
The US and Afghan governments have come to realize the need to negotiate with the moderate wing of the Taliban, Izvestia wrote, "which happened, in part, thanks to Russia’s influence and policy." Without dialogue with the Taliban, it is impossible to achieve peace in Afghanstan, Kabulov told Izvestia.
"It's time for the Afghans to stop shedding the blood of the Afghans. Russia has long been talking about the need to begin broad peace talks. Moscow welcomes such intentions. In addition to the president of Afghanistan, the Taliban also made statements about their readiness to start talks. Finally, both sides came to the understanding that we need to negotiate. It did not happen without the positive influence of Russia, which has been urging the parties to come to the negotiating table for more than a year," Kabulov said.

He noted that in April, National Security Advisor to the Afghan president Hanif Atmar will meet with members of the Russian Security Council. According to him, Moscow is ready to mediate negotiations between Kabul and the United States with the Taliban. "In order for us to act as an intermediary, both parties must request this. If this proposal is put on the table, of course we will react positively. This is a very real scenario," Kabulov said.
Chief researcher at the Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute Alexey Malashenko told the newspaper that the idea of Kabul's negotiations with the Taliban with the support of the United States is a step in the right direction and necessary. The Taliban, according to him, is part of Afghan society, which is impossible to ignore. As for Russia's proposal to mediate, it could contribute to the talks’ possible success, but this requires the restoration of confidence between Moscow and Washington.

Kommersant: Eastern Ghouta escalation might spark new confrontation between Moscow and West
The Syrian army went on a decisive offensive in Eastern Ghouta, an enclave near Damascus controlled by the anti-Assad armed opposition. The advancing government troops tightened its control over Eastern Ghouta amid UN resolution 2401 on a ceasefire in Syria, supported by the West and Russia. Despite Damascus saying that the operation is aimed against terrorists who are not covered by the ceasefire resolution, the Syrian army is simultaneously firing at the opposition groups that participated in the peace talks in Astana and Geneva, Kommersant wrote. According to the newspaper, the escalation in Eastern Ghouta largely negates Russia's efforts to complete the hot phase of the Syrian conflict - Moscow might have to "pay" the West for the Syrian troops’ offensive.
MOSCOW, March 5. /TASS/. It is Washington and not Moscow that has been ignoring the United Nations Security Council Resolution on the Syrian ceasefire, the Russian Defense Ministry said, commenting on a statement made by White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders.
"Before accusing Russia of violating the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2401 concerning Eastern Ghouta, the White House spokeswoman should have acquainted herself with the document. It is Washington and not Moscow that has been ignoring the resolution," the Russian Defense Ministry pointed out.
"It is Washington-controlled armed groups that have been attacking the Syrian government forces’ garrison in Harasta (Eastern Ghouta), seeking to change the de-escalation zone’s borders in breach of the agreements reached in Astana," the ministry noted.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Washington and its European partners did not issue a single statement condemning massive militant attacks, which had been taking place over the period of many months, but as soon as the Syrian government managed to fend off pro-US armed groups, the West started to make accusations "of bombing medical facilities" in Eastern Ghouta, while biased propaganda offices turned to spread rumors about chemical weapons attacks.
This whole US and Russia debacle over the UN resolution is just complete comedy.
Everybody knew what was written in the resolution and what would happen, resolution itself was to just atleast save small part of UN credibility.
Everybody knew that Russia and Syria would treat every "moderate rebel" organisation as terrorists. Vice versa Russia knew that they would blame them for breaching the agreement.
All in all these dumb cunts do this only for shit show and implicate that no one knows whats happening in real life. This is the absolute state of geopolitics, fucking comedy show for children.

>Syrian Army storms key town in East Ghouta region
BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:10 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a powerful attack this morning that targeted the key town of Al-Rayhan in the East Ghouta region of Damascus.
Led by the Tiger Forces and Republican Guard, the Syrian Arab Army was able to score a small advance near Al-Rayhan, yesterday; however, they were ultimately driven away from the town by the evening hours.
The Syrian Army restarted the attack on Al-Rayhan this morning in an attempt to finally take hold of this imperative town that has been under the control of the Islamist rebels since their ‘Adra offensive.
According to a military source in Damascus, the Syrian Army is currently pushing north from Al-Shifouniyah towards Al-Rayhan’s southern flank.
If the Syrian Army is successful, they will have access to Douma’s eastern flank for the first time in years.
Something tells me Turkey will not have gone to all this effort with them and their proxies to not carve out a piece of Syria for themselves
