Suspecting a more widespread problem, she carried out a study on the AI-powered facial recognition systems of Microsoft, IBM and Face++, a Chinese startup that has raised more than $500 million from investors.
Buolamwini showed the systems 1,000 faces, and told them to identify each as male or female.
All three companies did spectacularly when discerning between white faces, and men in particular.
But when it came to dark-skinned females, the results were dismal: there were 34% more errors with dark-skinned females than light-skinned males, according to the findings Buolamwini presented on Saturday, Feb. 24th, at the Conference on Fairness, Accountability and Transparency in New York.
As skin shades on women got darker, the chances of the algorithms predicting their gender accurately “came close to a coin toss.” With the darkest skin women, the face-detection systems were getting their gender wrong close to half the time.

The "problem" is well-known because I have heard about it before. It's fixed when you introduce a large sample size of people in testing. It's not even a finished product, is it? So how the fuck could this tech be racist if it's not even released yet?
Yes, and that variable wasn't considered because there were no black people on the development team and the white people basically assumed that if it worked for them it would work for everyone. That's naturalized racism. In other words, the ingrained racism of white people was passed down to the software they created.

There are two reasons this might have happened.
A) The training set on which the AI was taught to distinguish faces didn't contain many black faces, and thus when you present it with a black face it goes "Huh?"
B) The training set did include a bunch of black faces, but black faces are objectively harder to dostinguish between that white faces, due to e.g. lower sexual dimorphism, less contrast between shaded/unshaded regions, etc.
The problem with this bitch's thinking is that she automatically assumes that the answer is A) and then automatically assumes that the reason is because "Whitey devs be rayciss, yo".
I mean, the answer probably is (A) but the reason is that black people don'thave enough money to be able to afford any products with facial recognition software implementations, so training it on black faces would just be a waste of everyone's time
