Technically, one virus could infect you if it went undetected by the immune system and managed to enter a cell and replicate. But a high viral multiplicity of infection (MOI) by frequent or increased exposure is good way to ensure that people are infected and that they will quickly reach a threshold where they can start shedding (passing the virus to others).
The older strain seems to not have as drastic of physical presentation (girls didn't alter their appearance as much), but the newer one is way more infectious and has a pretty drastic presentation of symptoms in appearance and actions

Not necessarily- you could take on a very infectious strain and not be infected or have a low level but not be overwhelmed. I don't have access to the genome or proteome so I can't tell you how the immune system fights it, but if the cellular environment in the brain isn't conducive to the virus, it won't be able to replicate or spread as easily. May not be able to use a specific enzyme or enter the cells without a specific co-receptor upregulated in the presence of a specific hormone/transcription factor.
So testosterone could make it more difficult for the virus to infect. it depends on what inhibits viral expression or entry into cells.

It would be dormant or lysogenic, and would need to be activated (promoted to be expressed in the cell, probably by transcription factors if it's maybe in a specific operon) by the environment, so hormone amounts could definitely affect that.
