It literally means any and all guns they happen to not like. Its a made up phrase. Who cares that assault rifles are already heavily restricted and practically illegal. Just call all the other guns "assualt-style" and now they can be illegal too. Obviously, the whole idea is to trick ignorant people into thinking a ban on "assault-style weapons" is a ban on assault rifles, which are already banned. The result is states like NY consider a semi automatic gun with a pistol grip/compensator/shoulder thing that goes up to be the same as fully automatic weapons despite there being literally zero science or any form of evidence of this being the case (or that "assault-style weapons" have any statisticla signifance in crime data).
Gotta protect the children though. We cant allow maniacs to get their hands on shoulder things that go up.
