tall buildings in densely populated areas are rigged for demolition during their construction or soon after so that if something does go catastrophically wrong the building can be brought down in its own footprint instead of potentially toppling over into other buildings and causing orders of magnitude more damage. in the towers case this would have involved chemicals like thermite which resulted in the molten metal in the basements of the towers.
