I'm honestly disgusted that people here don't try to sympathise with every character in some way.

EoE has made me think/feel lots of different things about myself since I first watched it. Now when I watch EoE I think of instrumentality as just the frivolous things I can indulge in to distract myself from self-loathing; habits, hobbies, identities that swipe the problem under the rug instead of dealing with it. Shinji rejecting instrumentality tells me that even someone as pained as Shinji knows that they can learn to love themself one day. Facing reality can be hard sometimes but you shouldn't try to create your own so to speak

and that's why Shinji is my favorite character in NGE. at the end he accepted that the instrumentality was just running away.
one of my favorite lines toward the end was when Shinji says: "I still don't know where to find happiness. But I'll continue to think about whether it's good to be here whether it was good to have been born. But in the end, it's just realizing the obvious over and over again. Because I am myself."

I love that quote too, man. I also like how Shinji leaving instrumentality is paralleled in episode 16 when he leaves Leliel because he wanted to see everyone again and in episode 20 when he leaves Unit 01
