Not only was this a horrible asspull, it also entirely defeated the purpose of Team Yusuke's motives for the Dark Tournament. Yusuke was fighting with spirit energy sure, but he had a demon within him which was entirely against the point he was fighting for.

The author explicitly wanted to end the story at Sensui. He was basically told that he could either continue the story or hand it off to someone who would.

That's why the next arc ended literally mid fight half way through the tournament and then shortly after in the span of two pages its revealed that demons aren't actually evil, and it was just the king of hell brainwashing them so he could get more criminal cases to close to look good.
Togashi was crashing the story in a way nobody could pick it up after him.

a. It was foreshadowed during the entire Namek saga
b. Saiyans tend to get power ups when distressed, Gohan being a good example of that.
c. The team becoming strong enough to challenge the strongest fighter in the galaxy was building to that moment.

They even cemented this further when Goku said power comes only in response to a need rather than a desire when teaching Gohan.

Something an author "pulls out of his ass" to solve a complex situation he wrote himself into. Given that it had been foreshadowed several, several, chapters before (people say still on namek for a reason after all) you can't expect to actually call that an asspull. Anybody should had seen that coming.

I think something like Star Platinum having time-stopping powers is an actual example of an asspull.
Something that came out of nowhere without any foreshadowing and was exactly what the author needed to save the main characters from an inescapable situation.

Not an asspull, it was foreshadowed, Whis has been mentioning how fighting with your instinct rather than always think every move is how you can become truly strong. Is the culmination of Goku's training with Whis.

I'm actually surprised how well they handled the new form considering how fucking awful Toei has become in recent years. The fact it got any foreshadowing at all is impressive for dbs standards, it had decent animators for the fight scenes for once, and Goku was very quiet without any constant grandma ATATATATATATATATATATATA cancer. I think it works better than just slapping a kaioken on blue because "blue is calm and yellow is angry" which wasn't that bad an explanation to begin with.
