In Japan, the word heroine can mean love interest or main girl or even both depending on the series. It's like how Kaoru was both the love interest and main girl in Kenshin yet Bulma was the main girl yet not the heroine since Goku got with someone else. I do think heroine is associated more with love interest over there though which is the upset of what it's like in the West.
