The purpose of violence in video games is to give the player an excuse to run, fight, and hide. That's what makes games fun. It's not for the sake of gore - It's to create a sense of danger, and thus a challenge, which makes the game interesting. Violence is so common in games for the sake of gameplay, not for the violence in and of itself.
Also, anybody that says games cause violence is projecting. They think fiction is reality, and you might be stupid enough to replicate something you saw in a video game, but that doesn't mean everybody thinks that way.

Violent Video Games aren't the thing we should be targeting, We should be targeting Nintendo related products instead. The latter has caused more damage to the mind then any FPS game imaginable. I rather have 12 year olds play CoD then anything with Mario's face slapped onto it.
