Haibane Renmei has the sort of family dynamic with Old Home and besides has a town full of people. There's also the mysterious element of the priests and the walls. SSR has a much smaller human element, and a much more overtly dismal situation. I don't see how they're comparable.

That's an extremely integral aspect of the plot that was explained from the very beginning, shock value would be suddenly revealing the cute and comfy adventure is dangerous out of nowhere (it was regularly stressed how dangerous the abyss was since chapter one) and the event itself was not only the most pivotal defining moment for Nanachi's character but also set up the entirety of the fourth and fifth volumes that revolve around the results of the experiment.
Whining about the effects of the abyss being "edgy" is like calling the curse of the undead "edgy" for turning you into a gruesome corpse cursed to die in countless horrible ways until you finally lose your sanity, when anyone with a brain cell to spare and a throat devoid of cock understands that's an extremely important plot point absolutely necessary to the story.

But boy is this Shoujo Shuumatsu an enjoyable watch huh. Very enjoyable.
