I spent some time in the Bronx prior to my current job. It was hell. Although my students were mostly Hispanic (so it could have been worse), I looked everyday for job opportunities. Too many teachers, not enough nice jobs. People quit these inner city jobs in troves because it is impossible to teach students who think poverty and ignorance is a culture.
