These parents were trying to force the idea family narratives that they remembered in the 40's and early 50's (aka post WW2/depression economic boom). But by the time the 60's came around, we hard the cold war, vietnam, and economic downturn. These idyllic conservative families were now fantasy Children of the 60s AKA boomers caught on to this and rebelled. They did not want to become like their parents, i.e. clinging to a fantasy that's can never be realized. This negative trend exploded in the 80s and is now the status quo.
