Funny you should mention your gran. My great-grandmother was born in Detroit in 1903, when it was the beautiful, world-class city in the picture. She died at 96 in 1999, still lucid and smart, and in some of the last conversations I had with her, she lamented what had become of the city of her birth. I hasten to add, she was a great supporter of the arts, but no liberal in the modern sense. She understood what went wrong all too well.
