What are good Toriyama monster and robot designs? I know he did a lot of dragon quest stuff.

The secret is the friendly smile and wide eyes. It makes him look like a big dopey giant who'll have your back no matter what, like a really cool, funny older brother or cousin. It also makes the switch to scowling murder machine that much more menacing because he almost never scowls off the battle field.
