The Progressive party grew mainly out of the Farmers Union party in the 1920s. They merged with the Conservative party around the Depression, into the Progressive Conservatives.
Federally in the late 90s or so, the PC's got absorbed into the Reform party, which re-branded ultimately into the Conservative Party if Canada. But provincially the PC machine carries on in most provinces.
Historically the PC's have been socially liberal and fiscally conservative.
