The economy has been growing at a strong and accelerating rate through this entire period. If anything, that just goes to show how bad it really is. This level of division, polarization, and political violence in a time of economic prosperity is pretty much unprecedented.
Once the unevitable downturn comes, this shit is really hitting the fan. And given that a recession happens every ten years like clockwork, and we're six months from the 10 year anniversary of the 08 crash, now's a good time to prepare yourself.

It's mostly the media effect. You're only seeing and reading about (especially here on Sup Forums) the most extreme ends of the spectrum, of which most have come closer to their logical conclusion - conservatives recognized that their platform has been based in individualism and that the modern "GOP" is just liberalism-lite, Tea party evolved to ANCAP, and liberals have continued to spiral down the drain of lunacy and want to "equalize" everyone by stripping everything of any value from society.
It's quite funny because the SJW's calling all republicans "Nazis" is only going to hasten the shift as more people realize that hey, their 20 something "college educated" public school teachers didn't have a grasp on reality, they haven't been educated but indoctrinated and they'll begin to strip away all the rotten "values" they've been taught growing up (equality, diversity, individual freedom, etc)
