not just multiple children. Humans have been hunter gatherers for most of our existance. Having a few extra hands who didn’t have children to take care of could have been the difference between life and death. There was no lack of work for those people. Some people have a gay brother who can work like any other tribesman, will not have kids which means less competition for food, and if hard times come he doesn’t have kids of his own to feed, he can help his family.
