I'll try to state the general case briefly. Thinking in terms of individuals is not useful here, since we're dealing with entire societies. So, we need to think in terms of group tendencies, since those tendencies determine the nature of a society.
1. Human groups experienced differential evolutionary pressures over the millennia, leading to the rise of populations with different traits and tendencies. "Culture" (including language) is the product of the interactions between members of what have been relatively discrete groups.
2. Cohesion is very important in terms of maintaining the stability of a society.
3. Tossing different groups into the same polity/nation haphazardly destroys cohesion over time and leads to the degradation of that society, if not its collapse.
You don't need to share much with the other members of your population group; cohesion will tend to arise as a group property, while it will be similarly destroyed by importing other groups en masse. These things follow gradients - Russians ARE different from Britons, and Britons have sub-groups that differ from each other. But sub-Saharan populations are radically different from all of the above.

The US experience is that "integration" really isn't possible when population groups are too far apart. Blacks have been in the US for 400 years, and remain a highly-distinct sub-population. And that was with hundreds of years of pressure to conform from a large majority population.
