I think initially the RAF got some people free from prison, but later they turned West Germany into a police state. They were clever, and when police couldn't get them for years, they reorganized themselves and collected information about every citizen. I know for a fact that at one point my parents were stopped on the way to our grandparents by police with machine guns and their entire car searched. (There were days when that was done to every single car.) So-called SPD turned right-wing during that era, as did most of the couontry.
