It's simple, though nobody will ever say it.
Schools are no longer about actually addressing anything to do with the students. It's about scores, numbers, demographic charts. The fact that kids actually produce these values is inconsequential to the function of the education system. It's a business, basically state run and enforced day care.
Everything needs to be adjusted for the lowest bidder, the least successful individual. Everyone must be taught and advance at the same pace. Nobody can be excluded, not for exception skill nor failure. Exceptionals are ignored, failures are condoned, all throughout a drumbeat telling you, if you're white, how evil you are, how base and vile, and if you're a minority how you could be so amazing if only...something.
Whatever color or creed, you are a score, a collection of markers on a chart. Unless something very drastic happens, the various teachers likely will never even know your name, let alone show any active concern for you. A monotone march of ignorance, mediocrity, and dehumanization. It's not like a dead-end job either, where you can just quit or change, it's a state-enforced necessity for at least twelve years.
Hence why some crack, and do extreme things to lash out at what they feel brings them pain, or even just leave a scar to prove they exist. To force the "world" of their school to finally react to them.
It's easier to blame media, or tools. We're fucked up, and we often treat eachother poorly, that's why people go nuts.
