Female characters in anime and manga

Let's discuss female characters in anime.
Let's face it Sup Forums, most female characters in anime suck. Often they are badly written or just an asset to the MC/ his harem. There are a few exceptions of course (mostly when the MC of the anime is female).

Which anime/ manga do you think has well written female characters?
Which has the worst?
Discuss.

worst: Asuka
best: Asuka

Utena

Vanadis has the best females, they're pretty much goddesses.

The non harem ones usually have great characters, but yeah haram animes are guilty of it. What can you really expect from a harem anime though.

You need to watch more anime OP.

Isekai Smartphone has some of the worst females I've seen in a show. They're not particularly annoying or offensive. They're nothing, and that is the problem. Smartphone has the most nothing harem I have ever seen. I can't recall much of what makes the girls different from each other. They are as cardboard as the MC is. It confused me seeing light 'best girl' conversations in the threads, because the girls are so lacking in personality other than 'likes Touya'.

S2 doesn't count

A man of culture I see
>tips hat
carry on

Pic related. The only well written male is Roku, the rest of the scene is dominated by these ladies

Anime girls>Hollywood female characters.
Anime girls usually have actual personalities and actually act feminine and like a girl.
Hollywood female characters always act exactly like a man because muh "girl power" or they act like sluts who control people through sex.

I can't even think of a single modern western series with good romance because they always have to push some kind of feminist agenda.

Do not forget her 1995 incarnation

nice know your meme filename

Most girls from really good shounen and magical girl stuff are good
Casca is good
Morbito is good
Uh...
I don't know.
Any recent female characters that aren't just prepackaged and contrived moe/porn/lesbosex caricatures.

Also:
>personality
>femininity
>Rei

...

>woman have to act like men to be well written
OK

This, of course op only thinks characters like motoko are 'well written' while ignoring all the other female characters that are great while still acting feminine.

What constitutes a well-written female character? A character who is a well-written character, and whose gender was assigned at the last minute? What is a well-written character in the first place?

I like the Major as well. But to avoid the thread turning in to "Manly Women doing Manly Things" taking over the proceedings, I put forth these two.
They're two of the most major characters in Turn A Gundam, and may as well be the leads if Loran didn't exist. Despite there being a long time since I last watched Turn A, I always had a very positive impression of these two, even considering the goofy nature of their Prince and Pauper dynamic, and some of Dianna's questionable decisions.
Seeing Dianna see and learn about the people being affected by the conflict in the show was just great, with the episode where she has to be a nurse standing out in my memory. Then there's the moment where she goes to the Heim sister's father's grave, and just breaks down. I really like these two.

Also I'm no yurifag but there's one scene between them that just makes me go "Oh my". If you've seen Turn A, you probably know what I'm talking about.

The way Bag was written reminds me a bit of Takaya Noriko. Both characters had this single, explosive burst in courage and heroism, whereas prior to that they're wimpy crybabies. I think Bag is actually better written, in that there's more build-up to her "blooming", but in fairness Gunbuster had less episodes to work with.
Bag's journey of finding her place, albeit very simple, tickled me in a good way. The way her cleverness was displayed was a bright spots, even if there were points where her solutions did not make much sense (Serval bus jump). As well, even when she was weak and easily frightened, it rarely veered in to being annoying; one of my favorite scene in the show is Bag's wimpiest, girliest moment. She's a frail but smart girl for the entire run, with shades of selflessness sprinkled here and there.
This come to a head in episode 11. I'm not going to spoil it, but Bag is at her absolute best here, and it still strums my heart strings thinking about it now. It singlehandedly made her one of my favorite anime females.

Gally.
She needs no intro or explanation if you don't know why she's good you should just read the manga.

...

The Major is a shallow fanservice character.

...

Monogatari has some greats

why is she resting her arm on the speech bubble

Flay is the best and worst character in Gundam SEED. She's an innocent teenager, a horrible racist, a heartbroken child, a terrible harpy, a girl in love, and a manipulative hussy. She is a two-faced horror of a woman and is also the most interesting thing in the show. As much hate as she gets, and as much as I agree with them, she's the one person who's not named Mwu La Flaga that I remember with any clarity.
I don't like her, but Flay is best girl.

The best female character I’ve seen is in a manhua

...

Best girl Cagalli was better than her in every way and actually mentally sane.

I wanted to avoid posting Manly Girls doing Manly Things in this thread, but I could not help myself with this one.

Birdy is cool! COOL! She is also cute, but mainly COOL!
She's a cop from space and beats up evil mutant aliens with her fists! She parkours all over cities while sparkling lights ignite from her combat heels! During the day, when she's not beating up bad dudes, she's a cutie-pie pop start/model!
When she accidentally murders an innocent while on the job, she takes total responsibility for it without a second thought, leading to the show's core concept of body sharing and the events of the show. When she's sharing a body with Normal-Japanese-High-School-Student(tm), she acts like the best fembro any man can ever ask for. Even if the first season was weak, Birdy is just THE BEST!

I still don't know to think of this show and its characters after all this time.

>Let's face it Sup Forums, most female characters in anime suck
Are males much better? Let me answer that for you: No.

That's quite a comparison, but it makes sense when you put it that way.

Sounds like fem Captain Marvel done right.

The top 10 main characters of all time are dominated by males

But not a single one of them is from anime or even manga.

Geez, there's anime and manga by women and/or for women, you know? They have female characters written from female perspectives, rather than female characters written from male ones. Honestly you don't have a right to complain when if you don't even bother to see what actual women have to offer.

Rico is cool! And smart! And resourceful!

...

Then name some examples please

...

People always argue about who is best girl whenever Eva is brought up. Little do they know, that best girl is a skyscraper's height above their heads.

I love anime girls. Cute, sexy, tough and can do anything. Simply amazing! If only real girls were half as good.

I'm so sad I can't have a 2D girl love me.

...

Female characters have always been better in anime.

literally, figuratively, and absolutely best girl in all possible universes
good taste, anons

>haram animes are guilty of it
what did he mean by this?

dude misato isn't THAT tall

Harem girls are shit including this one

That harem animes are absolute haram

WTF are you talking about user
Without female anime characters I would have nothing to fap to

>S;G
>harem anime
even worse:
>kurisu
>harem girl
you make me want to vomit
maybe instead of posting such heresy you should actually watch the show some time
here's a pro tip: just because there are attractive females in a piece of media doesn't make it harem-bait

memriTV is a blessing upon mankind

Not him, I played the game and got the shittest ending
Christina was a bitch to me the whole game, Mayu got shot in the head, and I went back to the seventies
How do you get the harem endings?

Why are we getting so many shit threads tonight?

oh i haven't played the game, i'm talking about the animu, which is a masterpiece imho
if the game makes the series into harem garbage then that's even more reason for me to disregard it entirely

>if the game makes the series into harem garbage

Watch more anime faggot.

if it's so good why don't they make an animey out of it rivaling the original so i don't have to waste my time with video game trash

You went too far. It was a good try.

I think it depends what you're comparing to.

If you're comparing to TV and Movies, for instance, anime often has way better female characters. Even in the harem shows. Because if you're watching the show to be attracted to the women it is a lot more interesting (even sexually interesting) if they're fully fleshed out characters.

? i'm not sure what you mean
honestly, i love the anime but i don't feel like wasting my time with a video jame

It already failed. You can't revive it. Try again later.

are you schizophrenic?
be honest, user

This is a good one

Female characters in western media almost exclusively follows one pattern.

An example of that pattern is all the female characters in James Bond movies. Sexy Antagonists or Sexy Allies with no backstory or interesting character traits, which eventually end up fucking Bond because he is so hot (or he borderline rapes them).

Female characters in anime might end up fucking the main character (or otherwise falling all over their dick) but at least in most shows they'll be their own people with their own goals and history and personality, etc.

Everything he said is right though.

The greatest written female character

After she got BTFO and stopped lusting after Raragi she became a thousand times better.

>Kurisu
Were you dropped on the head as a child?

>The top 10 main characters of all time are dominated by males
>main characters
I mean, the large majority of main characters are male to begin with.
