People from different regions of Italy speaking their local dialects often won't understand each other at all, unless they've traveled extensively and have an interest in languages/linguistics.

Look at the wikipedia page, click on the links, and you'll see most are actually accents, not dialects, and while some of them are classified as dialects that is disputable.
