I've been studying nip for more than a year now, anime helped me to get into it faster than other people. It's frustrating, but you can't expect to become fluent and to understand everything in a year or two though. But you can't even get discouraged because of the writing system. The more you improve, the harder it gets, know that. Studying a couple of hours a day without thinking too much of the results is a good start. Ganbatte ne.

I've tried to learn French so many times over the years since I also dropped it in 9th grade even though I always got good grades in it.
Thank god I get to hear it often enough in anime. Just today I learned the phrase "Qui veut faire l'ange fait la bête" when I hit random in foobar and apparently that's a song in one of the Eva OSTs. Also, pic related.

Difference for me is I love the kanji system and even though my progress has been relatively slow over 5 years studying it now, I enjoy it so much I can't imagine giving up just looking shit up and writing it down all the time even if I feel discouraged a lot.

it's because you lack discipline necessary to handle learning a challenging language such as Japanese. this is coming from someone who had no discipline whatsoever and flunked my way through school. I gotten overwhelmed so many times learning Japanese and got burned out. what finally motivated me was the pain of not learning the language surpassed my ADD and I've studying consistently everyday for the past 3 months. I also gave myself a clear goal which was pass the N2 test and wagered money on it and set to take the test this coming January.

Just start with small goals that chain into even bigger goals. As long as you keep practicing and learning everyday you'll get there eventually. I used to give up on everything because I thought I had to do in it in X amount of time and treated everything as a race so I never felt I was improving. If only I had never given up and kept practicing I'd be pretty decent at everything I attempted.

I disagree. While there's overlap and they can both be cultivated at the same time (especially in the early stages), understanding a language and translation are their own skills. Writing ability in the target language can be more important at times and even if it's your native language doesn't necessarily mean your writing skills in it are exceptional. Coming up with the other-language equivalent of someone else's ideas off the top of my head can be quite its own challenge but I can sure understand what they mean before that!
