It was never about Sup Forums for one thing. Everyone associates Sup Forums with anonymous, but that was a total front. Sup Forums claimed all kind of hacker cred but the best they ever did was board raids and some kiddy scripted ddos programs that may or may not have been handed out by anonymous at some point.
Anonymous was a bunch of actual hackers, network admins, and general computer autists with a pronounced progressive/libertarian slant that mostly hung out on IRC channels. There was never a core "group" and people came and went all the time. Ideas were passed around and sometimes a few people would act on them. It was really really low key and not nearly as romantic as people make it out to be. Most of these guys got older, had families, grew out of the whole deal and never went back. Mostly, it was Obama that broke up anonymous. With him in power, the idea that the world was run by a conservative theocracy went out the window. Things were going to be "better".
