Scanlation thread bois

Scanlation thread bois
currently staying up late cleaning some pages since I want to try and make sure the series I'm working on can start releasing by 2018, if I get done cleaning everything I may as well start typesetting it too
waiting on a proofread script to start typesetting a different series and a TL that won't disappear to start on another one
what about you guys?

"everything" referring to volumes worth of chapters
hopefully a typesetter shows up before I finish cleaning it all, but meh

Not doing much, I mean it is Monday.

Translating some 60s titles that are full of pop culture references so obscure that there is hardly even info on them in English.

Not as fun as it sounds because I'm second guessing my understanding of the material every page before realizing it's just an allusion or three fucking my comprehension up.

that sounds like a pain in the ass, wew
Do you know if the cleaning process ends up being different with manga that old, the oldest stuff I've worked on is from the mid 2000s.

What are you working on?

Paper quality is probably the only factor, but you'll find good paper and shit paper from every decade.

Probably off-topic but what model of scanner do you guys use? (I'm assuming scanlation is a combo of scanning and translation) I have some old game manuals I'd like to preserve and am thinking of upgrading.

will someone ever pickup JAGAAAAAAN! again?

>8 page 4koma chapters
>25-30MB each
Why are some people so incompetent?

I'd like to thank whoever picked up Alice on Border Road. Waited for it for ages.

Still looking for one?

Thinking of picking up RYOKO, might start releasing it next month now that I have all the Shonen Sunday raws that I needed.
Could use a typesetter to help.

that's pretty rough, time to find an old japanese person somewhere

what's it about?

Would anyone care if I did more mitsudomoe since it stopped being translated?

are you sure, isn't that manga quite popular?

it stopped being translated around the anime finished. Does anyone still care is what I am getting at

Translate if you like it, not because other people do.

someone just uploaded something i did months ago. if i didnt notice my own typeset style i would have forgotten i even did this.

this happen to you guys?

I would care more if you did more Mitsudomoe porn

the group I'm doing it for still needs one afaik, there are typesetters, they're just not on my project since there's more important stuff to deal with someone will probably get freed to do it soon
I do think there's a typesetter not on a project right now though iirc, I should ask about that since my project is probably next in priority

Enjoying retirement. It's so stress-free~!

It's awesome,

I once fapped to a doujin and it wasn't until I saw a typesetting fuckup that I realised it was something I'd done a long time ago.

>Masturbating to your own translations
Is this extremely awkward for anybody else?

Yeah, seconding this.

The best part of a scanlating career.

>picking up niggerstream's shit
those are jealous cunts that might just pick it back up if someone starts working on it.

>tfw youkai kyoushitsu has 2 chapters to go for almost a year now

mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=136591

I haven't read the first 2 chapters done yet but it's basically a post apocalyptic Toriko from what I've heard.

Do you still need someone?

I currently have a lot of Masami Kurumada's (Saint Seiya, Rink ni Kakero) work in Spanish and/or French. They're all cleaned and stuff so all I need to work on is the translation to English. I'll get around to it when school isn't such a hassle.

What are your favorite fonts, Sup Forumsnons?

So you translating from spanish to english or something?

I find it hard to fap to stuff I've worked on, epsecially if I did anything to the script.

Not impossible though.

Victory Speech or Meanwhile for dialogue, and Shout Out since it's so versatile for sfx. Hell most of Comicrafts fonts are great

Comic Sans.

Astro city, augie, obelix pro, kg architect

whens keijo coming back

i use augie, another, akbar and cc jim lee too much

Just read Kuragehime and how do you just drop a series 3 chapters before it's ending because of licensing? that's unfair

How many ethnic Japanese are involved in scanlation? Does your group have any?

yes. he's a lazy fuck.

it isn't dropped

anyone have the raw for this?
jumpbookstore.com/item/SHSA_ST01M02767601711_57.html

I just want to see Togashi's oneshot

>it isn't dropped
mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=38146

This?

What about it?

>500 days since last chapter
that's as good as dropped

yes, but this pic is from the first part and I have the raw for that
I want the second part

manga was on hiatus
>Kuragehime's 17th and last volume is finally going to be coming out on November 13, and we are going to give priority to it shortly thereafter so we can complete our oldest project that we've been working on since the very beginning seven years ago, so we are extremely excited about that next month

but I already read rest of the chapters? must of magazine scans

my.mixtape.moe/wlpvmw.zip

Papyrus

Absolutely, man.

I love you user!!

I read about some sekrit raw circlejerks on irc
Where do I find them, I have raws to provide

Is it worth trying to get a redrawer or should I just put text over shit and call it a day?

Depends on how much you care about quality.

Yes, you should. Not everyone does though.

What fonts do you guys use for moans on h-manga?

imgur.com/a/fgpqt

That's most of my scan backlog (and a handful of AX issues). I have other books for various projects, but I don't need to scan those anytime soon so I'm taking it easy. Let me know if you want something in particular.

Any half decent handwritten font should do. Luna, Lemon Squeezy, or Gunny Rewritten are some I use.

any chance you could share those?

Don't do retranslations. Learn Japanese and do it from the original.

I have seen English-retranslated Kurumada stuff before and the translation is very far from the original because it was already localized to the other language.

Not that user but here you go. I don't have Shout Out font so couldn't upload that one.

>Victory Speech Lower
Fucking godlike, mate. Thanks. I was afraid it was only going to be the caps version but nah, you're awesome user.

You're welcome user, glad I could help.

CC Wild Words is a good, dependable font
don't judge me

...

Not New Wild Words... user...

Not him but thanks.

So I've apparently been living under a rock and just noticed yumeato got nyaa'd since a while back. Is there a replacement of sorts? I know about shobon but don't know if it's as reliable or even where the uploaders went.

They've been published in English.
If you can't walk into an American bookstore, find a torrent/download

Unfortunately I don't have the time to learn another language. And these scans are just so I can get the basic idea of what's going on. I wish I knew Japanese

You can't set aside 30 minutes every day?

Yup

Well I could. Just lazy or mentally exhausted. Still a college student after all

Spanish is the most beautiful language, so I don't understand why you'd want to ruin it by turning it into ugly English.
In fact the official scanlation should be Spanish, it has more speakers in the world anyway.

Depending on which figure you want to cite for the number of second-language speakers, English is spoken more than any language but Mandarin.

So use them to read on your own; don't make scanlations out of them.

Why not?

As a typelet starting to learn experiment with different fonts and someone new to the typesetting scene, why is CC Wild Words considered the new Comic Sans?

Is it because everyone with two brain cells used it for everything?

I've been looking at someone really dated typesetting guides for help and they all recommend Astro City and Wild Words for main dialogue. When did WW become hated?

You can use Wild Words, but don't abuse it and use it for everything. Though, it's mostly TSer shitflinging. You'll never see people outside the scene complaining about wild words.

Yeah, using different fonts for main dialogue, shouts, moans, etc. I also agree that 99% of everyone will not care what you use unless you butcher it with Comic Sans like a retard.

You got any good fonts for moans? I've only found shitty looking ones in every font guide I've seen. I now admire people who do all the sfx with a bunch of crazy shit.

I use Wild Words for all of my main dialogue but use different stuff for boxes, SFX, small text, and anything else that I think should look different. I haven't been given shit about it, but then again I've only had one other TS look at it.

It's already hard enough to translate from Japanese to a romance language. Translating from that then to English just loses too much of the original meaning. It's pretty strongly frowned upon in scanlation.

I don't actually have moaning fonts. I've done across moans yet. I don't do h-manga (mostly gag manga), so that might explain why.

If you come across any big SFXs, don't just use a standard textbox or text line, craft it. Take your letters individually and play with them.

so if something is being scanlated to spanish, i can't translate from spanish to english?

While I agree that generation loss does happen when you go from Japanese to Spanish and finally English, no one seems to give a fuck as long as it's legible these days.

Third generation translations are better than google translate/MTL shit, but that's not really saying much, to be honest.

In any case, Japanese to English indeed the best way so as to lose the least amount of potential meaning (depending on your moon skills).

If you're retranslating from Spanish, you might as well find someone willing to do JP-EN somewhere here.

I don't use it but it is fine, certainly better than shit like Anime Ace or Astro City. Also get used to centering your text and breaking your lines, and don't get too close to the borders of the bubble unless it's absolutely necessary.
I think that typesetting guide that gets posted here all the time covers this already, you should read it.

anons, what websites would you use to look for manga translators? I no longer have one for a manga and I figure that I need to go looking at this point or else wait until I know Japanese.

>wait until I know Japanese.
Ultimately you know this is the right course of action, so what are you waiting for? Get to it.

Yeah, I've read a bunch of them that talk about that stuff. Centering and shaping sentences, breaking lines, using hyphens for large words, etc.

I mean, I am practicing, but I'd prefer that 11 chapters of manga didn't have to wait years because I procrastinate like hell on grammar memorization

Reps are good but you should gradually wean yourself onto actual reading practice. If you want someone to yell at you, head to /djt/ in /jp/ for fun.

Also blame the mods for kicking /djt/ out of Sup Forums.

It's still a good font, just overused.
Newer fonts like totally awesome and victory speech are fit much better in skinny bubbles that are so frequent, and are more legible overall, especially at smaller sizes. They also actually have a proper bold. But that's just nitpicking really, most people won't care.
As long as you're not using anime ace or some of those garbage lowercase fonts without italics I see frequently you're good really.

Sorry for the late reply
