You know for instance during WW1 soldiers who were married took pictures of their wives in their wallets. Soldiers who were younger and didn't had wives yet just took some random pictures from magazines who they liked.
That's because you don't see women only physically but symbolically. They symbolize the homeland who is " behind the front ", they symbolize the future because they are the future mother of your childs, they give you reasons to fight for, litteraly.
